Conditionals In Past Tense

If Clause in Past Tense

Case I - If + simple past +would:

This is the case in which the verb in the if clause is in the Past tense and would and the verb in first form that is If + simple past + would + V_1:  e.g.

(a) If I had an umbrella, I would lend it to you. (But I haven't an umbrella)

Case II - Action mentioned does not take place

This is the case in when we don't expect the action mentioned in the if clause to take place.e.g.

(a) If he tried to threaten, me I would inform his father.
